 Tis the season to be jolly, and what better to kick of the proceedings than Slade and Wizzard with those perennial seasonal favourites "Merry Xmas Everybody" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". The Now Christmas collection stands head and shoulders above the field of festive compilations as it actually has a lot of unusual tracks--the titles may be familiar, but the artists doing them are all quite unexpected. Hence you get Kylie purring her way through "Santa Baby", the Spice Girls indulging in some "Christmas Wrapping" before taking you on a "Sleigh Ride", Samantha Mumba telling us "All I Want For Christmas", Billie Piper casting her eye back to "Last Christmas" and Ronan Keating teaming up with Maire Brennan for a "Fairytale Of New York".

With a fairly even mix of pure pop and R&B, Platinum Christmas should be on every chart fan's wish list for the festive season. On the pop front, Britney Spears ("My Only Wish (This Year)"), S-Club 7 ("Perfect Christmas"), Backstreet Boys ("Christmas Time") and N-Sync ("I Don't Wanna Spend One More Christmas Without You") keep the seasonal goodwill at an all-time high with plenty of sleigh bells and winter warmers, only to be let down by Steps with an appalling cover version of one of the all-time greatest Christmas songs ever, Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody", which they desecrate with vocoders, plinky-plonky synths and some of the weakest vocals ever committed to disc. On the R&B front, things fare a bit better with Monica ("Grown up Christmas List"), R.Kelly ("World Christmas"), Whitney Houston ("Who Would Imagine A King") and TLC's startling, yet strangely compelling, reworking of Phil Spector's classic "Sleigh Ride". With the exception of TLC, the cover versions tend to be the less compelling tracks, with the original material proving a far fresher take on the Christmas theme.

This semi-remake of Holiday Inn (the first movie in which Irving Berlin's perennial, Oscar-winning holiday anthem was featured) doesn't have much of a story, but what it does have is choice: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, an all-Irving Berlin song score, classy direction by Hollywood vet Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood), VistaVision (the very first feature ever shot in that widescreen format), and ultrafestive Technicolor! Crosby and Kaye are song-and-dance men who hook up, romantically and professionally, with a "sister" act (Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to put on a Big Show to benefit the struggling ski-resort lodge run by the beloved old retired general (Dean Jagger) of their WWII Army outfit. Crosby is cool, Clooney is warm, Kaye is goofy, and Vera-Ellen is leggy. Songs include: "Sisters" (Crosby and Kaye do their own drag version, too), "Snow", "We'll Follow the Old Man", "Mandy", "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" and more. Christmas would be unthinkable without White Christmas.
